History and Functionality

This is one of the first machines built in France using the principle of the ORIGINAL ODHNER.

The setting mechanism located on the top of the machine can process nine-digit numbers.

The crank on the right rotates the transfer mechanism in one direction or another depending on whether addition or subtraction is being performed.
Again multiplication and division are reduced respectively to a series of additions and subtractions.

The lower portion carries the movable carriage which can be displaced step by step.
This carriage contains the result mechanism and an eight position lap counter thus achieving 8-digit multiplications. The two butterflies at both sides of the carriage are used to reset the result counter and the lap counter.

The SANDERS Company which used to manufacture this kind of machine, was the first to add an electric motor.

About The Inventor

DACTYLE, established in the early 20th century, made its mark in the French mechanical calculator industry with the launch of the "DACTYLE" calculator in 1905. This period was characterized by significant technological progress and a growing need for computational tools in various sectors.

The foundation of DACTYLE was driven by the increasing demand for efficient and reliable calculating machines. The company aimed to create calculators that were not only functional but also showcased the precision and elegance synonymous with French craftsmanship.

The 1905 DACTYLE calculator was a product of the company's commitment to quality and innovation. It was known for its robustness, accuracy, and user-friendliness, quickly becoming a preferred choice for professionals in diverse fields.

What set DACTYLE apart in the competitive landscape of calculator manufacturers was its dedication to precision engineering. This dedication was rooted in the French tradition of excellence in mechanics and design, a tradition that DACTYLE upheld with great pride. Each DACTYLE calculator was not just a functional device but a work of art, showcasing the meticulous attention to detail that was the hallmark of the company.

DACTYLE distinguished itself in the competitive calculator market through its focus on precision engineering. Each calculator was crafted with meticulous attention to detail, reflecting the company's dedication to both functionality and aesthetic quality.

As the calculator industry evolved, DACTYLE remained at the forefront, continually refining its products to meet changing customer needs. The company's calculators were not just tools for computation but also represented the blending of technological innovation with traditional craftsmanship.

Despite its early successes and contributions to the calculator industry, DACTYLE, like many companies of its era, faced challenges due to the rapid pace of technological changes and the eventual advent of electronic calculators. These factors, combined with the evolving demands of the global market, led to the company's decline and eventual closure.
